Who is a Teacher You Appreciate in St. Clair Shores?

Tuesday is Teacher Appreciation Day. Who is a teacher past or present in St. Clair Shores who has made a difference in your life, or your child's life?

Teachers are being honored across St. Clair Shores for their work in the classroom, assisting in after-school activities and contributing to the community.

Patch wants to recognize teachers past and present who have made a difference in your life, and in the lives of your children.

Reader Marsha Salome previously shared a story about a teacher, and school, that made a difference for her son, Peter.

"My son is affected by autism and had a successful inclusion experience at Koepsell Education Center, one of the elementary schools in the South Lake district.  Autism is a neurologically based disorder that can affect behavior, socialization, and language as well as cause/contribute to sensory impairment.  Peter joined Koepsell in kindergarten, starting at one hour a day with supports and slowly increasing his time each year.  Upon graduation last year, Peter's time had been increased to 3.5 hours a day, a testament to his hard work and persistence.  Peter was surrounded, encouraged, and supported by many staff and parents; however, his biggest support group was his peers.  The students at Koepsell Education Center provided Peter the opportunity to view, practice, and/or model appropriate social skills and behaviors. They mentored Peter, guiding him when necessary on the playground, during Choice Time and/or recess as well as in the classroom.

Peter has not only been provided an education through his time at Koepsell, he has also educated.  Staff, parents, students, and the South Lake community have been able to experience autism as it affects Peter, an opportunity that perhaps some might not have otherwise been able to experience in an inclusive setting.  While it is unfortunate that Peter will not be moving forward alongside the friends he gained during his time at Koepsell, the experiences he shared with everyone involved will continue to support him throughout his life."
