Whiz Kids: Shores Network for Action and Prevention

Students from Jefferson Middle School team up with representatives from local law enforcement to remind retailers in St. Clair Shores about age restrictions on tobacco and alcohol sales.

  • Whiz Kids' names: Alexis Brown, Audrey Cook, Lindsay Dobbins, Teresa Feldpausch, Jodi Mitchell and Abbie Sand.
  • Whiz Kids' grade: Seventh
  • Whiz Kids' school:
  • Whiz Kids' accomplishment: The students are members of the Shores Network for Action and Prevention (SNAP), which accompanied St. Clair Shores police school liaison officers on May 26 to speak with businesses throughout the city that sell alcohol and tobacco. Students reinforced rules and consequences of selling to under age kids.
  • Whiz Kids' key to awesomeness: "This project allows youth, police officers and interested community members an opportunity to visit local tobacco and alcohol retailers and educate them on the laws on selling to minors, in an effort to reduce access of these drugs to youth and to help keep St. Clair Shores a safe and healthy community. The Macomb County Health Department provided a tobacco education presentation to the middle school youth that were involved in this project," said Melissa DiPirro, community organizer with Fraser-based CARE (Community Assessment Referral & Education).
