Whiz Kid: South Lake's Leigh Slater Honored

The South Lake senior is one of nine student-athletes from Michigan High School Athletic Association schools receiving a Scholar-Athlete scholarship.

  • Whiz Kid’s School:
  • Whiz Kid’s Accomplishment: Slater, a senior, was selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship from Farm Bureau Insurance. Additionally, she will attend the University of Michigan in the fall and study pre-medicine.
  • Whiz Kid’s Key to Awesomeness: Received 10 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and softball and was team captain in all three sports. A three-time all-county selection in volleyball and softball, and a two-time all-conference performer in softball. National Honor Society member for three years; serving as president as a senior and vice-president of the local chapter as a junior. Involved in student government and volunteer work with the South Lake Mom and Dad’s Club for four years. A three-time class president.
  • Quote from Slater's application essay: "The ability to respect other players through good sportsmanship is one of the best things an athlete can learn for their own life, even outside of sports.”  

Every Wednesday a child in St. Clair Shores will be recognized for his or her achievements and identified as the St. Clair Shores Patch Whiz Kid. Editor Edward Cardenas will accept nominations via e-mail at edward.cardenas@patch.com. Nominations must include the nominator's name and contact information, the whiz kid's name, age, school, accomplishment and key to awesomeness.
