Whiz Kid: Christopher Green

Lakeview junior constructing a Giving Garden at Jefferson Middle School for his Eagle Scout project

  • Whiz kid’s name: Christopher Green
  • Whiz kid’s age: 16. He is a junior at Lakeview High School.
  • Whiz kid’s accomplishment: For his  Eagle Scout project, Christopher will be constructing a “Giving Garden” at Jefferson Middle School. The garden will occupy the courtyard facing Little Mack. Christopher will begin the project by erecting privacy fencing to enclose the courtyard. He will then install six raised planter boxes, one of which will include a raised bed with the letters JMS in the center. After the project’s completion, the science class at Jefferson Middle School will start planting the Giving Garden, and the harvested produce will be donated to local families in need.
  • Whiz kid’s key to awesomeness: “I am very proud of Chris Green for helping to make our dream of creating the JMS Giving Garden a reality. As educators at the middle school level, we sometimes do not get to see the impact we have on students nor do we get to experience the maturity of our kids as they become young adults," said David Lavender, Jefferson Middle School principal. "Chris’s decision to give back to Jefferson validates our efforts to positively connect with students, as he is working hard to give back to the people, school, and community that influenced the person he is today and will become in his future. This project, supported and created by eighth-grade science teachers Sarah Bowman and Lisa Beckman, has already connected members of our community. Landscape Services, American Excavating, the Cultivation Station of St. Clair Shores, parent and student volunteers, the JMS PTSO, and JMS staff members all collaborated to design and now create an ‘urban farm’ where members of our community will use and appreciate the products grown and harvested by the students of Jefferson Middle School.”
