Violet Students on Track to Good Health in St. Clair Shores

Students, teacher and the community now have access to a walking track at Violet Elementary School in St. Clair Shores

The Violet Elementary School community has a new walking track for physical education classes, walking clubs and evening strolls in St. Clair Shores.

After nearly four years of planning, grant writing and fundraising led by teacher Lisa Pecoraro, the track was recently opened during a school and community celebration.

"I am on a personal mission to fight childhood obesity," Pecoraro said about her effort to build the track.

The one-tenth of a mile track provides an all-weather path for her students who have a one-mile run in the fall and spring. It is also intended to be used by staff on their breaks and Violet's neighbors.

A number of fundraisers including were held by Pecoraro to raise all but $1,500 of the $17,800 project. Additional fundraisers will be held for the balance of the project.
