South Lake Briefs: Pare May be Sold, Fundraisers Planned

South Lake approves the purchase of bleachers for baseball field; potential buyers show interest in Pare building and Senior All-Night Party Committee plans two fundraisers.

District explores selling closed school building
Although it has been closed for more than three years, Pare Elementary School is still a source of expenditure for South Lake Schools. As a result, district officials are considering selling the property.

“The building still requires maintenance and operations support to maintain the facility,” said Matthew Dishman, director of business and operations. “We pay for snow removal and lawn maintenance. We also pay for water, electrical and gas services to keep the facility operational and prevent it from falling into disrepair.”

In addition, South Lake pays for all the exterior lighting around the building, Dishman said. Other costs associated with keeping up the facility include monitoring the roof for leaks, maintaining exterior equipment, and sending staff over on a regular basis to ensure that everything is in good working condition.

The district spends in excess of $30,000 a year in upkeep costs, said Allan Innes, president of the board of education.

“The money expended on this maintenance would be better spent on our existing facilities,” said Dishman, adding that the district has recently received inquiries regarding the building from interested parties.

To promote the sale of the property, South Lake officials will be meeting with a broker who has previously worked with the district.

New bleachers coming
South Lake baseball fans will soon have additional seating during games. The South Lake Board of Education recently approved purchasing bleachers for the baseball field at a cost of $8,394. The cost of bleachers will be covered by the district’s 2008 Bond Fund.

The bleacher purchase includes a transport kit, which will enable them to be moved and used as extra seating for the band during homecoming football games, said Matthew Dishman, director of business and operations.

Fundraiser scheduled for Senior All-Night Party
The Senior All-Night Party Committee is hosting a McDonald’s Night from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the on 9 Mile in St. Clair Shores. During the fundraiser, a portion of all sales will be donated to the party. Patrons need to ask for their receipts to be placed in the fundraiser box.
