School Briefs: South Lake to Host Celebration of the Arts

Event showcases students' art and musical talents. A scholarship golf tournament will be held this weekend, and Congressional page program applications due Friday.

Festival of the Arts

Community members will have an opportunity to view the talents of South Lake students during the fifth annual Festival of the Arts, which will be held from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, at .

Visitors will get to see artwork created by students form all grade levels.

Elementary artwork will be on display from floor to ceiling in the cafeteria, and each student will be represented by at least one piece of artwork, said music teacher Lisa Mangan, one of the event's organizers.

The middle and high school artwork will be on display throughout the hallways, and the pieces will be adjudicated by prominent local artists and other judges, Mangan said. Recognition ribbons will be awarded for winning entries.

Also on display will be artwork from local archdiocese schools that have a partnership with South Lake.

In addition, students from all five South Lake Schools will perform mini-concerts throughout the evening.

Below is a schedule of the concerts in the auditorium:

  • Koepsell Education Center third and fourth grades, 5-5:35 p.m.
  • Seventh Grade Choir, 5:35-6 p.m.
  • third grade, 6-6:35 p.m.
  • choir, 6:35-7 p.m.
  • eighth grade choir, 7-7:15 p.m.
  • fourth grade, 7:15-7:50 p.m.
  • fourth grade, 7:50-8:25 p.m.

Concert in the cafeteria:
Avalon Elementary third grade, 5:30-6 p.m.

Wrap-up concert in the gym:
Bands in the Round (representing all district bands), 7:30-9 p.m.

South Lake superintendent Pamela Balint said the Celebration of the Arts is a great community event.

“It truly showcases our students’ talents and the skills of our teachers, who foster those talents. It also gives students who might not always shine academically, a place to excel,” Balint said. “We hope many members of the South Lake community come out and show their support for the kids, because they have put a lot of effort into their artwork and musical performances.”

Scholarship Golf Tournament

The St. Clair Shores Optimist Club, along with clubs throughout Macomb County and the Grosse Pointes will be holding the annual Junior Golf Tournament for boys and girls, ages 10-18, at the Cherry Creek Golf Club in Shelby Township. Winners may be sponsored in the Michigan statewide tournament, which serves as a qualifier for the Optimist International Jr. Golf Tournament held at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Tee times start at 2 p.m. to watch some of the top young golfers in the county.

Congressional Page Program

High school students living in the district of U.S. Rep. Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak, have until Friday to apply for the U.S. House of Representatives Page program. High school pages learn first-hand about Congress, live near the Capitol, and working as support staff for the House of Representatives. No classes held during the summer session, and students do not receive academic credit for participation.
