School Briefs: New Teachers and Cavalier Camp

Lakeview hires 12 new teachers and South Lake freshmen learn about their new school through various activities.

12 new teachers join Lakeview faculty
hired 12 new teachers for the 2011-12 school year. The district’s student population grew by more than 300 students this year.

Cavalier Camp familiarizes freshmen with their new school
In most high schools, freshmen orientation is a one-day activity that doesn’t always successfully familiarize ninth-graders with their new schools. That’s why annually hosts Cavalier Camp, a week-long event during which in-coming freshmen participate in learning activities while getting to know their school, administrators and teachers.

A total of 130 freshmen participated in this year’s Cavalier Camp, which took place Aug. 22-26 and culminated on Aug 30. For four hours each day, the students participated in various small-group activities under the supervision of teachers. In one activity, a science teacher was reviewing units of measurement, so he sent the students around the school to measure various objects.

“It’s a real great opportunity to connect with the teachers and administrators, and to get acquainted with the building,” said Assistant Principal Michael Fringer.

On Aug. 30, after the week-long camp, the freshmen were teamed up with juniors and seniors who will act as their mentors for the rest of the year.

This was South Lake’s fifth year of hosting Cavalier Camp. “It’s really successful.” Fringer said.
