School Briefs: Cell Phones for Soldiers Collection, Nautical Mile Donation

Lake Shore and Lakeview are collecting cell phones for soldiers and the Nautical Mile Merchants Association make a donation to South Lake for helping with Aquafest.

Cell Phone for Soldiers

and high schools are collecting gently used cell phones for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Proceeds from phones that are refurbished and recycled are used to purchase 60-minute calling cards that are sent to troops serving overseas. Additionally, the schools are participating in a contest sponsored by radio station 99.5 WYCD that rewards the school that collects the most cell phones with a free concert by American Idol's Casey James. The second place winner will receive a pizza party. Phones can be donated at the front office of both schools until Dec. 15.

Joe Hickmott, general manager at Microtel Inn & Suites and member of the , recently presented a $100 check to the band program for their work during the Casino Night. Members of the band helped setup and breakdown the casino. Proceeds from the casino also benefited .

held a blood drive in November for the American Red Cross and collected 76 units. Joshua Denzler, student representative to the Board of Education, said the goal was 66 units.
