Holm, a graphic design student, said he was watched old movies with 1950s and 1960s cars for inspiration for the winning roadster logo.

"I can't believe I won," said Holm, of Chesterfield Township, about winning the competition. "I have entered a few (contests) but I didn't win anything."

He was one of three Macomb Community College students whose cruise logos were selected as scholarship winners. Each received cash from the Kiwanis and —a lead sponsor of the cruise—which was then matched by a scholarship from Macomb.

"This was a hard choice," said Peter McInnes, president of the Shorewood Kiwanis, which organizes the annual cruise and helped select the winner.

Holm received a total of $1,400 in prize money for his first-place logo. Second place was awarded to Linda Hopkins of Royal Oak, who received $900. Sara Earl, 21, of Royal Oak, came in third and recieved a total of $700 in prizes.

In addition to the scholarship money, the recognition is also important for the winners because they have something which can be added to their portfolio, according to Macomb professor Ron Hood.

The 2012 Harper Charity Cruise will be held on Aug. 29.
