Lakeview Briefs: Former Board Member Dies and Write-in Candidate Files for Vacancy

Former board member Stanley Bittner passes away, and Michael Bayer files to run for vacancy on the board of education.

Longtime former board member dies
The Lakeview Public Schools community has lost a prominent member. Stanley Bittner, who served on the Board of Education from 1971-1983 and 2001-2005, died Oct. 3.

Most recently, Bittner was a write-in candidate for an open seat on the board.

Daniel Dombrowski, president of the Lakeview Board of Education, expressed his condolences to Bittner’s family.

“I had the honor of serving with Mr. Bittner during his latter term of service on the board,” Dobrowski said. “While the Bittner family grieves their loss, the thoughts and prayers of the Lakeview Public Schools family are with them.”

Write-in candidate files for vacant board seat
When the candidate filing deadline arrived in early August, the Lakeview Board of Education found itself in a unique situation: having more vacancies than candidates.

The board has three open six-year terms, and, at first, there were only two candidates who filed: incumbents Michael McCain and Philip Thomas. However, now another candidate has emerged. Lakeview resident Michael Bayer has filed as a write-in candidate

Former board member Stanley Bittner had also filed as a write-in candidate, but he passed away on Oct. 3.

“At this point, I do not know how the City of St. Clair Shores is going to treat this rare circumstance. I suppose we will learn more in the days to come,” said Daniel Dombrowski, president of the Lakeview Board of Education.

In Michigan, school elections are administered by the municipalities in which the school districts are located; therefore, Lakeview’s elections are administered by the St. Clair Shores City Clerk’s Office.
