Lake Shore Baseball Teams Shave Hair Off to Give Back to Community

All proceeds from the Wednesday event went directly to Wigs 4 Kids.

The baseball teams got snipped, trimmed, buzzed and even mohawk'ed Wednesday morning as stylists from put their magic touch on them.

The event generated proceeds to donate directly to the neighboring salon, , whose mission is to make wigs and offer emotional and psychological support for those, especially children, who have lost their hair due to cancer or other illnesses and may have nowhere else to turn.

“I hope this will benefit the kids by opening their eyes and showing them that life is bigger than baseball, it really is,” said Ryan Kottke, varsity head coach. “The more we can do that at a younger age, hopefully the more they can mature into great community people and great adults.”

Wigs 4 Kids founder, Maggie Varney, a Lake Shore graduate herself, was ecstatic that the teams chose her program to donate to.

“This program is all about children helping children and today is a perfect example of that,” said Varney. “Even though the boys' hair wasn’t long enough to donate, they still found a way to come together and make a difference.”

With 26 members of the varsity and junior varsity teams present, the positive energy surrounding the event was undeniable.

“It’s a privilege for us to play baseball every day and go out on the diamond and play our hearts out,” said Alex Lettner, a senior at Lake Shore. “It’s not about winning or losing, we’re just lucky enough to pick up a ball and play baseball whenever we want; this brings us back to the perspective to give back to our community.”
