Jefferson Middle School Assistant Principal to Become Princeton Elementary Principal

Sherry Michalowicz will assume her new duties next school year.

Sixteen years ago, Sherry Michalowicz began her career as a teacher at Elementary. Next fall, she is returning to Princeton–this time, as the school’s principal.

The Lakeview Board of Education recently approved Michalowicz’s appointment, which is effective July 1.

Michalowicz currently serves as assistant principal as well as district coordinator for the Response to Intervention project. Response to Intervention is a multitiered approach to help struggling learners. The process begins with quality instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom. Once struggling learners are identified, they are provided with various interventions to accelerate their rate of learning.

“Because of her unique combination of experiences, I asked Mrs. Michalowicz to lead the important Response to Intervention reform effort, which we started in the summer of 2009, and she has done a great job on this project,” said Lakeview Superintendent Karl Paulson. “Sherry’s work in Lakeview demonstrated her expertise and enthusiasm while carrying out her duties. She is the best person for the Princeton job, and she proved that through a rigorous, objective selection and interview process.”

Before joining Lakeview, Michalowicz taught for three years in the early 1990s in Bloomington, IN, where she and her family lived. In 1995, the family moved back home to Michigan, and Michalowicz was hired at Princeton Elementary, where she taught fourth and fifth grade until her appointment as assistant principal at Jefferson Middle School in 2007.

Michalwicz said she is excited about this next stage in her career.

“I’m very honored to serve Lakeview in this new capacity. Lakeview is my home away from home, and I’m delighted to be back at Princeton, where I have so many happy memories. I hope to make a positive contribution by creating an environment of academic and social success for every student.”

Reflecting on her objectives in the new position, Michalwicz emphasized her focus on student achievement.

“My goals are to make academic decisions so that every child can be successful. Studies have shown that if students are below grade level in fourth grade, they have a good chance of being unsuccessful in high school. We want to get to those kids before they fall behind.”

Michalowicz is married to Bob, a Ford retiree, and they have three grown children. They live in Harrison Township.
