Rio Vista Drain Pipe: Travesty on the Lake

Rio Vista Drain Pipe/St. Clair Shores Property Values

After looking at several waterfront properties in St. Clair Shores, I discovered the stinky eyesore known as the Rio Vista drain pipe. I can't believe it's allowed to exist at all, but especially the way it is. It's ruining the lakefront properties near it, and their respective values. The water is stagnant because the pipe breaks the current, so waste and debris collect at the shorelines around it. Furthermore, the amount of bird feces on the pipe itself is enough to have the area quarantined. I would think the city would want to preserve the lakefront tax base, not destroy it. After looking at as many as 10 lakefront (not canal) homes, and only finding 3 with decent water frontage, it's clear that if steps aren't taken to preserve the shore line, it will be far less valuable. Specifically, along with the drain pipe and related mystery PCB-source situations, the unsightly electric wires/poles running along the lakefront home properties need to be buried (i.e., Statler St, Wildwood, Ardmore Park); and the water levels need to be maintained. I don't recall ever seeing the water this low. This is the best lake system in the world, and a great source of beauty, recreation, commerce, and income. Actions need to be taken now to preserve it.
