Update From State Sen. Steve Bieda

Sen. Bieda shares his thoughts from and updates from Lansing.

Dear Friend,

This weekend is the Memorial Day Weekend. In the minds of many, this marks the “official” start of summer. With warming weather and sunny days, it certainly does feel as if summer has finally arrived. As we take to the outdoors with our friends and family, I hope that we all take a minute to remember that we have this weekend to enjoy because of the sacrifices made by our women and men in uniform.

I wish you all a happy Memorial Day and hope that you enjoy the weekend safely and responsibly.

Legislative Update

SB 800: I am a proud co-sponsor of this legislation which would provide tax credits to small businesses who hire veterans. This legislation would help the men and women returning home from overseas find a job and also helps our small businesses grow. As more of our brave soldiers come home as we draw down combat operations, we should be ready to welcome them with open arms and make sure that they are able to provide for their families. This bill is awaiting a hearing before the Senate Committee on Finance.

SB 92: I am happy to announce that this legislation was signed into law by Governor Snyder this week. The legislation outlines specific guidelines aimed at preventing elder abuse through power of attorney and follows suggestions made by the Elder Abuse Task Force. Durable power of attorney has been largely unregulated in Michigan and is the most common instrument of elder abuse. Individuals who assume power of attorney must now sign a form accepting financial responsibility, keep financial accounts separate and promise to act in the best interest of the individual they are now responsible for.
