Tonight: St. Clair Shores to Consider Amended Fireworks Ordinance

City Council will consider an amended fireworks ordinance during Monday night's meeting.

City Attorney Robert Ihrie is scheduled to present an to City Council Monday night following an increase of complaints from residents setting off pyrotechnics in recent weeks.

Increased use of fireworks has been attributed to a  retailers to sell bottle rockets, Roman candles and other flying devices to consumers and bars municipalities from regulating fireworks use on federal holidays–such as July 4–as well as the day right before and after.

The amended ordinance would outline permissible times and dates for discharge of fireworks. Consumer fireworks, which are "designed to produce visible effects by combustion" would be limited to use on national holidays, and the day before and after.

These fireworks include those that leave the ground, according to the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services.

Low-impact fireworks, defined as ground and handheld sparkling devices, could not be discharged between 11 p.m. - 7 a.m., according to the ordinance.

A violation of the amended ordinance would be punishable by a fine of up to $500, in addition to fees and costs.
