Romney Wins Big in Clair Shores

Michigan native Mitt Romney won St. Clair Shores in the Republican presidential primary election, leading former Sen. Rick Santorum by nearly 14 points.

Mitt Romney led all Republican presidential candidates Tuesday in primary voting in St. Clair Shores, .

The former Massachusetts governor and Michigan native beat rival Rick Santorum by nearly 14 points, according to unofficial results posted on the St. Clair Shores website.

Nearly 21 percent of the registered voters in the Shores cast votes in the primary, which was close to the pre-election projections by city officials.

One voter who cast a vote for Romney was resident Freddie Hagenah. She voted for the former governor because she felt that "he has a solid background" to address her concerns about the economy, jobs, health care and national security.

Romney's victory came despite a weekend visit by Rick Santorum to at which drew nearly 350 people for an early morning rally.

Resident Jason Means was a Santorum supporter, and wrote on the St. Clair Shores Patch Facebook page that he was voting for the former senator because, "I believe he has the best chance at defeating Obama and he shares my views on pro life issues and gun control!!"

Although the Democratic primary wasn't contested, resident Joan Kostich cast a vote for President Obama.

She supports many of his efforts, including the auto bailout.

"Imagine where this state would be if he hadn't bailed out Detrot's automakers," Kostich said.

Obama supporters also gathered at the Caribou Coffee in Grosse Pointe Woods for a house party to meet with voters.
