New Cameras to Aid Police in Mount Clemens and Macomb County

Cameras have been placed in downtown Mount Clemens that are linked to the dispatch facility Macomb County Sheriff's Office. Additionally, traffic cameras throughout the county can be accessed by the Sheriff's Office and shared with local police department

Police departments throughout Macomb County now have an additional tools at their disposal through the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.

Nearly 100 traffic cameras operated by the Macomb County Department of Roads can now be accessed by dispatchers at Macomb County Sheriff's Office in Mount Clemens.

If an accident or police incident was occurring in a community, dispatchers would be able view the intersection and assist the local department with live video. Additionally, the cameras could record the intersection.

"We can't be everywhere," said Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, who called the cameras a force multiplier. "(The cameras are) going to be helpful for law enforcement."

The county's camera program, which was spearheaded by County Executive Mark Hackel with the collaboration of Wickersham and Mount Clemens Mayor Barbara Dempsey, has also led to the placement of  three security cameras in downtown Mount Clemens to help the Sheriff's Office monitor areas in the county seat and entertainment district.

Funding for the cameras, which cost about $20,000 each and with 1080p resolution and ability to zoom into objects about a half mile away, comes from the Sheriff's drug forfeiture fund. An additional five cameras will be placed in the city by November.
