Macomb County Brings Together Agencies in New Communications Center

Officials celebrated the opening Friday of the COMTEC communications center, which can provide a variety of public safety and other services throughout Macomb County.

Local, county and state officials gathered Friday to open Macomb County's new COMTEC communications and technical operations center.

The Communications and Technology Center brings together 91 employees from the Macomb County Emergency Management, Information Technology, Road Department and Sheriff's Office under one roof in a repurposed area of the Road Commission building on Groesbeck.

The $13.5 million project and was funded through a variety of sources, which included approximately 75 percent in grant or outside funds and 25 percent from the county’s capital budget.

It was delivered on time and under budget, according to Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel.

"COMTEC integrates Emergency Management, public safety, the Department of Roads as well as IT services under one roof," said Hackel in a release. "This one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art facility is a model of intergovernmental cooperation and today this vision has become a reality."

The 25,000 square-foot, multi-level center features state-of-the-art E-911 system, new dispatch radio consoles and a 20-by-50-foot video wall with 54, 70-inch individual monitors which allow personnel to view road cameras, maps, siren alerting systems and television stations.

In addition to providing dispatch services for the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, Clinton Township and Sterling Heights will soon be utilizing the facility for their dispatch needs.

Officials added that the center can support dispatch and emergency response efforts throughout the county.
