Hackel Appoints Resident Deputy County Executive

County Executive-elect Mark Hackel appoints Mark Deldin deputy county executive.

St. Clair Shores resident Mark Deldin has been appointed Macomb County's first deputy county executive.

Deldin, who is currently the superintendent of Chippewa Valley Schools, was asked by Mark Hackel, Macomb County executive-elect, to serve in this position.

"The opportunity came to me. It wasn't anything I was searching for," Deldin said. "The opportunity to make a difference in government at a county-wide level and the opportunity to be part of this new form of government, and the opportunity to work with Mark Hackel, is an opportunity I could not let pass. I am honored to accept the opportunity."

Deldin informed the board of education Monday night and school employees Tuesday morning. He will stay with the district until Jan. 21, and will start with the county on Jan. 24.

The 53-year-old will work with Hackel in the daily operation of the county, and will be responsible for the daily management, coordination, direction and control of
County departments, facilities, operations and services, according to a press release.

"He is well versed in issues that affect the people of Macomb County," said Hackel in a release. "Mark Deldin will bring to the position of deputy county executive a wealth of experience in government and sound public policy judgment. He is a highly skilled and accomplished public servant who will be a great asset to Macomb County government."

Deldin will be responsible for developing strategy, research and reports on initiatives and proposals, and he will be responsible for management of the county's $460 million budget and 43 departments.

"He is a dynamic leader, a visionary, and a tireless advocate for children," said Henry Chiodini, the president of Chippewa Valley Board of Education, in a release.

As superintendent, Deldin oversaw a budget of $131 million with more than 1,800 employees in 24 district buildings. Chippewa Valley has more than 16,232 students, and is the eighth-largest district in the state.

Prior to becoming superintendent in 2005, Deldin oversaw transportation and facilities management and was executive director of human resources with Chippewa Valley. 

Deldin previously worked for the Oak Park School District and Lake Shore Public Schools, where he also served on the board of education. He holds a bachelor of business administration degree from Detroit College of Business, and a master of science degree in human resource administration from Central Michigan University.
