Candidates for County Commission Districts 3 and 10 provided short biographies in advance of Tuesday's general election.

Voters in St. Clair Shores will take to the polls Nov. 6 to determine who will represent the city in the Macomb County Commission.

Below are biographies provided by the candidates seeking office:

County Commission District 3

Randell J. Shafer (R)

  • Employer/profession: Retired U.S. Army officer, logistics manager
  • Party affiliation: Republican

  • Unsuccessful bids for elected office: Ran for U.S. Congress in 2004 and 2006, Republican nominee in 2010 for County Executive, fourth term as VFW Bruce Post #1146 junior vice commander
  • Why are you running for this office? I want Macomb county to be a county I want to raise my kids and grand kids in. I don’t want it to become another Wayne County -- it is in bad shape. I care about my community and I care about my kids.
  • What is most pressing issue facing St. Clair Shores? Maintaining our quality of life, maintaining our property values and making sure government doesn't get in the way of people becoming prosperous.

Veronica Klinefelt (D)

  • Age: 48

  • Employer: Besides holding office, I have been a stay at home mom.
  • Party affiliation: Democrat
  • Office running for: County Commissioner in District 3
  • Previous elected offices: Eastpointe City Council, Nov. 2003-Nov. 2011, East Detroit School Board, Jan. 1998-Nov. 2003.
  • Unsuccessful bid for office: I ran for Mayor of Eastpointe last year against the incumbent. 4079  votes cast, I lost by 116 votes.
  • Why am I running: "I want to take the experience I have gained over the last 14 years and apply that knowledge to the position of County Commissioner. I strive for open and honest government and I want to be a strong voice for the south end of the county."
  • What is the most pressing issue facing St. Clair Shores: "Achieving the continuation of valuable services in the face of shrinking revenues. The most pressing issue facing the county is to ensure there is a proper balance of government between the County Commissioners and the County Executive. This struggle is not about the current Commissioners or the current Executive, it is about putting a structure in place that safeguards taxpayers dollars for generations to come."

  • Why are you running for this office? I feel that Macomb County is at a cross roads. More than ever, we need a County Commissioner with some toughness. One who will give the Board a strong voice when dealing with the Executive Branch. We in the County are also in dire need of new and better jobs, and I’ll make this a priority.

  • Why are you running for this office? "I want to see more transparency in County Government, and I would like to see better representation at the county level, to improve the services for our senior citizens and veterans. 
  • What is most pressing issue facing St. Clair Shores? "I believe water quality is very important to the Shores as well as senior services.
