Fred Maloof Donates Nearly $250,000 to St. Clair Shores

Fred Maloof has donated and given much to St. Clair Shores during his nearly 30 years as a resident and business owner in the city, but Monday night he presented the largest donation in the history of the community to City Council.

The humble philanthropist, and former owner of donated $248,326 to cover the costs to build a pavilion in . 

"(The pavilion) will be a tremendous centerpiece for all activities and for all families to enjoy," said Mayor Kip Walby, of Maloof, who has donated to Cops for Kids, Dog Park and the Special Needs Program. "This will be a lasting legacy. We are so grateful for what you have done and what you have given us."

With Maloof's donation, the city will build a 40 by 60 foot pavilion in the park and directly west of the current band shell. It will feature a 12-foot illuminated archway to the Maloof Family Pavilion. The roof will provide cover for 30 picnic tables.

Greg Esler, parks and recreation director, stated the structure will be a "central location" for residents and events such as the green fair, art fair and fireworks.

"It is going to be a fabulous project," Esler said. 

Construction is expected to last about six to eight weeks, and will include an tribute to Maloof. 

"I love this city and I love the people," said the 91-year-old retired businessman said.
