Emergency Sirens Activated Monday Due to Severe Thunderstorms

Macomb County follows a certain criteria to activate emergency sirens when dangerous weather approaches.

The wail of emergency sirens heard throughout Macomb County Monday was due to the severe thunderstorm warning with high winds, emergency management officials stated.

Vicki Wolber, Macomb County emergency management coordinator, stated the emergency sirens are activated when:

  • A tornado warning is issued by the National Weather Service,
  • A severe thunderstorm warning with winds of 70 miles per hour or more (which occurred Monday),
  • A sighting of a funnel cloud by a reputable source.

Wolber added there hasn't been any reports of major damages from Monday's storms.
