As Selfridge Planes Return to the Skies, Employees Return to Work

Operations are returning to normal at Selfridge Air National Guard Base following the end of the federal government shutdown.

Regular military operations have resumed at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, and the first missions were flown Thursday since the federal government shutdown.

According to a release from the base:

  • All military technicians and federal civilian employees of the 127th Wing at Selfridge Air National Guard Base were called back to work last week and most resumed work on Tuesday, Oct 8. This applies to about 650 people in total.
  • About two dozen contract workers who work with the 127th Wing have been off the job since Oct. 1. These workers are expected to return to work in the next few business days.
  • On the morning of Oct. 17, the 127th Wing at Selfridge launched both A-10 Thunderbolt II and KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft. Additional sorties were scheduled for later in the day.
  • The 127th Wing did not generate an aircraft sortie (a take-off) during the period Oct. 1-16.
  • One Selfridge-based KC-135 did land at the base on Oct. 8, returning from a deployment in Southwest Asia.
  • About 50 members of the 127th Wing remain deployed overseas, primarily at two locations, one in Southwest Asia and the other in Guam.
  • The October Unit Training Assembly, also known as “drill weekend,” was cancelled in October. The November UTA will be held as scheduled. The 127th Unit Training Assembly is the primary monthly training and readiness activity for more than 900 Citizen-Airmen of the Michigan Air National Guard. The October UTA days will be made up based on operational and training needs at the unit level.
  • The commissary, base exchange, child care center and golf course at Selfridge are all operating on normal schedules.
  • Several new full-time hires who were scheduled to begin work on Oct. 1 were on hold, due to the shutdown. These new hires are expected to begin work in the next few business days.
  • During the shutdown period, Oct. 1-16, nine people enlisted in the 127th Wing.
