Applications for Sheriff Now Being Accepted

Macomb County Sheriff's Office provides a number of services to St. Clair Shores.

Macomb County has started the process to appoint a new sheriff following Mark Hackel's election as the first county executive.

Registered voters in St. Clair Shores, and throughout Macomb County, can submit their applications to be considered by a three-member commission comprised of Chief Probate Judge Mark Switalski, Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith and Macomb County Clerk / Register of Deeds Carmella Sabaugh.

While St. Clair Shores has its own police department, the sheriff's department provides a number of services and support to the city including prisoner transport to the Macomb County Jail; multi-agency task-forces including auto theft and drug units; and the marine division has a sub-station along the Nautical Mile.

The Sheriff's Office is approximately 30 percent of the county's $205 million general fund budget, and has 485 budgeted positions.

The sheriff runs the county jail, and provides road patrol for the townships of
Harrison, Macomb, Lenox and Washington and the City of Mount Clemens. Other services include circuit, district and probate court security, K-9 unit and the marine division.

Applications will be accepted by Macomb County Sheriff Appointment Committee  through 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10.

The three-member committee will meet again at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, in the Macomb County Board of Commissioners conference room on the ninth floor of the Administration Building, One South Main, Mount Clemens,  to decide which applicants will be interviewed,  interview dates and when the new sheriff will be appointed.
