With No Insurance, Family of Man Mobbed after Hitting Boy Worried about Intensive Care Bills

A Macomb County man accidentally struck a boy who ran into traffic, then was mobbed by a large group of men when he stopped to give assistance, Detroit police say. His cash and credit cards were also stolen.

A Macomb County man who was mobbed and beat up after he accidentally hit an 11-year-old boy on Detroit’s East Side Wednesday is still unconscious and remains in intensive care, where he’s racking up hospital bills the 54-year-old tree trimmer’s family doesn’t know how they’ll pay because he didn’t have health insurance.

The man, who lives in Roseville but has not been named by police, doesn’t appear to have violated any traffic laws, the Detroit Free Press reports. Surveillance video from a camera at a gas station near the accident scene shows the boy ran into traffic and was hit by a pickup truck about 4:10 p.m. Wednesday

When the driver got out to render aid, he was mobbed by a large group of men who beat him unconscious. His money and credit cards were also stolen, his daughter said.

He is at St. John’s Hospital in Detroit, where he's in critical condition with serious multiple head injuries. His family is planning a fundraiser to help cover the mounting medical expenses.

“ … He doesn’t deserve to have (medical bills) hanging over his head forever,” the man’s 20-year-old daughter, who asked that her name not be used, said via a Facebook message. “This isn’t fair by any means. It hurts me to know how much pain he’s in and there’s nothing I can do about it but sit here with my sister and hope for the best.”

She said her dad is a kind-hearted man who checks to make sure all the squirrels have exited the tree before he begins cutting and “an amazing dad and person.”

“... What happened to my dad is a shame,” she said. “He was doing the right thing like he always does. He’s the guy that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.”

Detroit police haven’t identified any suspects in the attack, but are asking anyone with information to call (313) 596-1616 or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-773-2587 (SPEAKUP). Tipsters can remain anonymous and possibly receive a cash reward.
