Detroit Man Arraigned on Charges in Multiple Break-Ins

Kory Smith was arraigned on break-in charges in the Shores and is a suspect in cases in the Grosse Pointes and Birmingham.

A 40-year-old Detroit man wanted in a string of robberies in St. Clair Shores was arraigned Tuesday in 40th District Court. 

Kory Kordell Smith was handcuffed and appeared in street clothes for his arraignment before magistrate Mark Metry on charges that he broke into Liquor and Wine Shop, and .

Police have been looking for Smith since Feb. 15, when they released a photo and description to the media.

He turned himself in Sunday to Detroit Police and confessed to the crimes, police said.

"With the assistance of his mother, girlfriend, parole officer and the Detroit Police Department Violent Crimes Taskforce, he was talked into surrendering himself," said St. Clair Shores police Det. Jim Wagner. "He understood his rights and accepted responsibility for what he has done."

Smith was charged with three counts of breaking and entering a building with intent to commit a crime of larceny, a 10-year felony, and malicious destruction of a building, a one-year misdemeanor, for the three cases. He was also charged with an additional charge of possession of burglary tools, a 10-year felony.

A plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf and Smith requested a court-appointed attorney for his case. He is being held on $60,000 bond. He faces a March 1 preliminary exam.

Metry also referred Smith to Macomb County Community Corrections to address his drug problem.

"I need it, I really do," he said.

He may also face charges stemming from a parole violation for a home invasion charge in 2000 in Wayne County. The Department of Corrections attempted to arrest Smith Feb. 14, but he escaped. An officer was injured during the arrest attempt.

Wagner said Smith might have been involved in burglaries in Grosse Pointe Woods, City of Grosse Pointe and Birmingham.
