Shores Police Join Crackdown on Drunken Driving

Officers from St. Clair Shores will take part in a statewide effort to crack down on drunken driving over the holiday weekend.

St. Clair Shores police will have additional patrols on the road Friday night looking for drunken drivers.

The additional holiday patrols are part of statewide drunken-driving crackdown funded through the Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. effort.

"We are going to out there in force," said St. Clair Shores Police Lt. Tom Willette.

Law enforcement officers across the state arrested more than 500 people for alcohol-related offenses during a drunken-driving crackdown in late August and early September in 2010.

"More people died in alcohol-involved crashes in August than in any other month in 2010," said Michael L. Prince, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, in a release. "And 10 people died in crashes involving alcohol during last year's Labor Day holiday weekend. Enforcement efforts like the Over the Limit. Under Arrest. crackdown help ensure the safety of all roadway users. Motorists need to be aware that if they are caught driving drunk they will be arrested."

Law enforcement officials recommend those who intend to drink designate a sober driver, take a cab or bus home or spend the night to avoid driving under the influence.
