Shores Man Sentenced in Fatal Drug Case

St. Clair Shores man gets sentence of up to 50 years in prison for delivering fatal dose of heroin to his estranged wife.

A St. Clair Shores man was sentenced Monday to up to 50 years in prison for supplying a lethal dose of heroin to his estranged wife.

Nicholas Barczi, 30, was one of the first people to be charged in Macomb County with delivery of a controlled substance causing death, a life felony, for the overdose of Nicole Waines, 25.

She died nearly one year ago in Barczi’s apartment after she took heroin Barczi purchased in Detroit.

Barczi was sentenced by Macomb Circuit Court Judge Matthew Switalski. Barczi's attorney, Steven Freers, reached a plea agreement with the Macomb County Prosecutors Office and Waines' family prior to jury selection for the trial on July 12.

As part of the plea, Barczi will serve no less than five years in prison.

"I don't want this to happen to another innocent girl," said Rose Streetman, Waines' mother, when he pleaded guilty in July. "I did it for my family, friends and my grandson."
