Fire fighters entered the structure and found Thompson on the second floor of the house. Fire fighters removed her from the structure, and unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate her. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Fire investigators from the St. Clair Shores police and fire departments determined the fire started in the living room and was caused by faulty electrical equipment.
