Rain Causes Numerous Accidents on I-94

St. Clair Shores police urge motorists to slow down and leave more space between vehicles on slick roadways.

The rain over the past 24 hours may have an inconvenience for shoppers, but for motorists, it contributed to a number of accidents on Interstate 94.

There were six accidents on I-94 Wednesday, and during the Thursday morning rush hour, there were three additional accidents on the interstate.

St. Clair Shores Police Lt. Tom Willette recommends motorists slow down on wet pavement, especially in the curves.

"People are hydroplaning when it rains, and (a car) loses friction between the tires and the roadway surface," he said. "People are doing the speed limit, trying to negotiate the turns and start to lose it and then they over-compensate."

He also recommended that motorists leave extra distance between themselves and other drivers on wet roadways.
