Police are reminding shoppers to be mindful of their surroundings after a strong arm robbery Nov. 26 of an 83-year-old St. Clair Shores woman at the CVS on Mack in Grosse Pointe Woods.
According to a police report, the woman thought she was being followed as she shopped in the store. After she purchased items, she exited the store and was putting her groceries into the trunk of her vehicle when a male in a pickup drove up and grabbed her purse.
The suspect, who was described as being in his 20s with dark hair, leaned out of the driver's side window and grabbed the purse, which caused the woman to fall to the ground.
The vehicle fled north on Mack, and east of Vernier. The woman injured her right elbow and hip in the fall, the report stated. Her cash, credit cards, glasses and medical cards were in her purse that was stolen. She was transported to Beaumont Hospital to be treated for her injuries.
Following the robbery, Grosse Pointe Woods police shared the following tips to be safe while shopping:
- Be mindful of your surroundings as you shop and do errands,
- Park in well-lit areas,
- Don’t keep purchases in open view,
- Watch for people lurking in parking lots and in stores,
- Don’t place purses in shopping carts, but in your possession at all times.
