Police, School Stymied by Generic Xanax in 4-Year-Old's Easter Egg

Each of the 30-some students in the preschool class were asked to bring in seven candy-filled eggs. Police are beginning the arduous task of determining how a single dose of the psychotherapeutic drug ended up in a plastic egg.

ROSEVILLE, MI — Police and school officials are puzzled by what a 4-year-old girl discovered inside a plastic egg she received during an Easter party at her preschool.

The child, who attended a party at Huron Park Elementary School in Roseville Wednesday, opened her egg when she got home and a single pill – later determined to be Alprazolam, a generic form of the psychotherapeutic drug Xanax – dropped to the floor, The Macomb Daily reports.

The girl’s mother was beside her when she opened the egg, which was supposed to contain candy, and retrieved the pill. She turned it over to Roseville Community Schools on Thursday. School officials then notified Roseville police.

School Superintendent John Kment says the problem seems to be isolated to the little girl’s egg, as no other parents have reported similar findings. As part of the Easter egg hunt, each child in the class had been instructed to place a piece of candy inside each of seven plastic eggs and then tape them shut.

“We have about 30 or 40 kids in there, so there are a lot of parents the police will have to contact,” Kment said.

Parents of children in the class were notified of the incident in a letter Thursday.

The matter has been turned over to the Roseville Criminal Investigation Division.
