Police Blotter: Rings Swiped, Grocery Theft Thwarted, Car Taken

St. Clair Shores police are investigating a variety of crimes, including a car stolen from a Harper business, diamond rings taken from a home, and an attempted grocery theft.

St. Clair Shores police are investigating the theft of four diamond rings and collector coins from the kitchen counter of a home in the 21600 block of Revere Street. A 52-year-old resident reported the theft, telling police the values total about $9,000 for the rings and about $200 for the coins. She also identified a potential suspect to officers, according to reports. 

Lady Tries to Leave With Loaded Cart

St. Clair Shores police arrested a 35-year-old Harrison Township woman March 30 after she left a local grocery store with a cart full of groceries without paying. An officer approached her in the parking lot, where she was standing near the open trunk of her car. She told the officer she was doing more shopping for watermelon but she was nowhere near the outdoor produce, according to police. She was charged with retail fraud and police found she has a similar criminal history.

Fraudulent Check Attempt

St. Clair Shores police are investigating the attempted cashing of a fraudulent check at First State Bank on Greater Mack Avenue. Polices said a woman entered the bank March 30 requesting to cash the check issued on a First State Bank check from a company in another metro Detroit suburb. Bank employees discovered the account on the check didn't exist and the bank manager called police while a teller tried to stall the woman, who requested the check be returned to her and she would just cash it at her own bank. She left after the teller walked away from the counter to seem as if she was going to retrieve the check, according to police. They do have a suspect but no arrest has been made.

Garage Door Tips Off Neighbor to Break-in

St. Clair Shores police are investigating the break-in of home in the 19800 block of Parkside Street in which a neighbor spotted the garage door repeatedly going up and down. The neighbor initially thought there was a technical problem but then saw a man who does not live at the home run out of the garage, prompting her to call police. Officers found the window of the garage broken out but nothing was missing from the home. Another neighbor told responding officers he believes the responsible person might live nearby, according to reports.

Son Arrested in Assault on Father

St. Clair Shores police arrested an 18-year-old man March 28 after he allegedly arrived home intoxicated and became physically violent with his father. The man is charged with nonaggravated assault and minor consumption of alcohol. He had a 0.16 blood-alcohol content and punched his father repeatedly before wrestling in the basement, then on the first floor of the home and then in the front yard, according to police. 

Car stolen outside Harper business

A 47-year-old St. Clair Shores man reported his 2003 Dodge Intrepid was stolen March 25. The man told police he parked outside a business in the 29200 block of Harper Avenue about 10 p.m. and returned about 45 minutes later to find his car was no longer there. One set of keys to the car was inside the vehicle. No evidence, such as broken glass, was found at the scene, according to reports.
