Police Blotter: Police Investigate Bird Shooting

A protected bird was killed in a residential neighborhood.

St. Clair Shores police are investigating the shooting of a protected Cooper's hawk Sunday in the 22100 block of Madison.

A 46-year-old resident observed the hawk in a tree near her house, and was watching the bird when she heard a gunshot.

The hawk fell from the tree, and the resident rushed to retrieve the stricken bird.

It was still alive when she found it on the ground, but it died a short time later, according to a police report.

The resident called police, who are investigating the incident. According to Detective Sgt. David Centala, hunting is illegal in St. Clair Shores.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources did not respond to inquiries about the possible penalties for killing a protected bird.
