Officer Recovering After Accident

St. Clair Shores police sergeant recovering after his cruiser was struck by alleged drunken driver.

A St. Clair Shores police sergeant is lucky to have not suffered more serious injuries after a 25-year-old woman from Hamtramck, who was allegedly drunk, plowed into his cruiser early Thursday morning.

Sgt. John Bowers was on westbound I-94, between 9 and 10 Mile roads, assisting with an earlier accident. He was in his car about 100 yards behind the accident, with his overhead flashers on, when he saw the vehicle quickly approaching.

"At the last minute, he hit the gas and tried to speed up," said Glenn Bowlin, St. Clair Shores police deputy chief. "She blasted into the back of him and pretty much destroyed his car."

Bowlin said moving the cruiser likely lessened the impact of the vehicle driven by the Hamtrack woman, which was estimated to be traveling at 60 mph.

Bowers, who suffered some cuts to his face and stitches to the back of head, may be released from the hospital Thursday.
