News Update: Suspect in Break-Ins to Stand Trial

A Detroit man wanted in connection with a number of break-ins in the Shores and other communities waived his preliminary exam.

A 40-year-old Detroit man charged in a string of robberies in St. Clair Shores waived his preliminary exam Tuesday and will stand trial in Macomb Circuit Court.

Kory Kordell Smith waived his preliminary exam Tuesday before 40th District Court Judge Mark Fratarcangeli on charges that he broke into Liquor and Wine Shop, and .

Police have been looking for Smith since Feb. 15, when they released a photo and description to the media. He turned himself in Feb. 20 to Detroit Police and confessed to the crimes, police said.

Smith was bound over on three counts of breaking and entering a building with intent to commit a crime of larceny, a 10-year felony, and malicious destruction of a building, a one-year misdemeanor, for the three cases. He was also charged with an additional charge of possession of burglary tools, a 10-year felony.

He is being held on $60,000 bond and will be arraigned March 14 in Macomb Circuit Court.

He may also face charges stemming from a parole violation for a home invasion charge in 2000 in Wayne County. The Department of Corrections attempted to arrest Smith on Feb. 14, but he escaped. An officer was injured during the arrest attempt.

Smith is also charged with burglaries in Grosse Pointe Woods and the City of Grosse Pointe.
