Macomb Holds Mock Disaster Training

Police and fire agencies from across Macomb County participated in a mock disaster training exercise at the south and center campuses of Macomb Community College.

It was just a drill, but police, fire and EMS personnel from across Macomb County responded to the center and south campuses of Macomb Community College for a simulated terrorist attack.

The mock exercise simulated a terrorist strike which injured students at both campuses and then tested the response emergency public safety agencies, communications and hazardous material decontamination.

"This is all about being prepared," said Vicki Wolber, emergency management coordinator for Macomb County.

This was the fourth exercise Macomb County Emergency Management and Communications has held in the past 11 years. About 400 first responders, students and volunteers participated in the training.

The training also allows for greater standardization among departments with training and equipment.

"In a real event, everybody is better prepared," Wolber added.

"This is all about being prepared," said Vicki Wolber, emergency management coordinator for Macomb County.

Aaron Coates was one of nearly 50 Macomb Community College students who participated in the training. Coates, 19, of Macomb Township, played a student  who was suffering from seizures, foaming at the mouth and unresponsive.

"Even though this was just a drill, I was soaking in what was going on and hopefully utilize it one day," said Coates.
