Ex-Mayor Dumas Completes Probation

A Macomb Circuit Court judge recently reduced the charge against former mayor Curt Dumas from a felony to a misdemeanor in his metal theft case.

Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Peter Maceroni has terminated the probation for former St. Clair Shores Mayor Curt Dumas and reduced his charges for as the city's department of public works director.

Dumas pleaded guilty in 2010 to a charge of misconduct in office for mishandling city funds while DPW director, but under a plea agreement reached with the prosecution, the charge was reduced Feb. 8 to failure of safekeeping of public funds after the probationary period, according to court records.

Prior to the sentencing in 2011, Dumas paid back $18,619 in restitution for funds that could not be accounted for from the sale of scrap metal, funds paid to the city during his tenure as DPW director. Dumas said that money was used for items including staff parties and baseball tickets.

Dumas, 54, served nine years as mayor and stepped down in 2004 to become the DPW director. He resigned in January 2010 from his job when the allegations of missing money were first made public.

As the criminal case concludes, Dumas is also being sued by his former defense attorney Brian Legghio for failing to pay nearly half his $9,500 legal bill, according to the Macomb Daily. He will appear in 42-1 District Court for a pre-trial hearing on Feb. 28 for this lawsuit.
