Fire Destroys Lakefront Condo Units in St. Clair Shores

A two-alarm blaze in St. Clair Shores destroyed two lakefront condo units, and damaged two other units, Sunday morning. The fire at the St. Clair by the Lake condos also caused the closure of Jefferson Ave.

A two-alarm fire Sunday morning in the St. Clair by the Lake condominium complex destroyed two waterfront units, and damaged two others, according to the St. Clair Shores Fire Department.

The fire was reported about 8:10 a.m. by the homeowner who stated it started in the fireplace area, according to Fire Chief George Morehouse.

The blaze then spread into the attic area of the structure near Jefferson and Glenbook Street. Due to the size of the fire, a second-alarm was called and personnel and equipment from Fraser, Roseville, Selfridge Air National Guard Base and Clinton and Harrison township fire departments to help fight the blaze.

Morehouse added that the building's roof, first and second floor collpased into the basement, which caused the two of the units to be a "total loss" and the other two units in the building to have minimal damage.

There were no residential, or fire firefighter, injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
