St Clair Shores Select Soccer - REVIEW

For those players contemplating joining the St Clair Shores Travel Soccer, you need to go in eyes wide open.  This is a troubled club that has had several issues uncovered over the past few years.  These issues include;

Soliciting money from local businesses and individuals using a tax ID that did not exist.  In fact, the St Clair Shores Select Travel Club did not even register as a legitimate business until 2012.  This can be verified by going to the Michigan LARA website.

The board at the time awarded scholarships to players out of those funds.  Many clubs do this, however in this case 3 of those scholarships went to children of the Board Members.  To my knowledge, they club has not yet reached out to any businesses or individuals and advised that they made a "mistake" using a Tax ID that didn't exist.  Two of those individuals are still there and in leadership positions of the club.

The St. Clair Shores Select Soccer name is not even registered and owned by the current club.  This again can be verified under the Michigan LARA website (ID 71190D).

This club has filed with an appended INC on the end of the name (Michigan LARA ID 71236J).  As of today, the Michigan LARA website does not reflect their 2013 Annual Report as required.

This club has had a very high turnover of coaches and players in the past few years.  This is a direct result of the way in which this soccer club is managed.  They claim to have state and nationally ranked coaches.  If you decide to go and try it, ask how many of them have played the game and to what levels.  Ask them how many of their players have gone beyond high school.  If they claim more than one or two, ask them who and where they played.

There are many great parents and players at this club.  They also are an extremely cheap alternative to many other clubs, so they definitely are an affordable option.  However, if you are just starting out your children in travel soccer, it would be HIGHLY ADVISABLE to check out a few other local clubs to compare:

Michigan Burn
Michigan Wolves and Hawks East
Michigan Nova and Gators - PSG
Gators SC
Fraser Travel
Michigan Legacy

Each of these clubs is a far better option and more professionally run.  SCS Select Soccer is by far the worst travel club on the east side.  There are many, many parents and players that would attest to how poorly and unprofessional the top leadership of this club is.  You will be doing your children a big disservice in the short and long-term by placing them in this program.  Until this program has a change of leadership, and the city does a better job in overseeing these clubs, your best bet is to take your children outside of the city for travel soccer.

If you are going to stay in the City, and are looking for a cheaper alternative, you are better off to stay with AYSO which is the best run soccer program in the city.  Very competent leadership.
