Community Corner

Justice For Lexie

Dear St. Clair Shores-

Due to the recent tragedy regarding poor Lexie, I would like to propose an option to you. Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident, as pets or companion animals have been shot by police elsewhere as well. However, you have an opportunity here. Do not let your community go down in history as the city that condoned this violence, rather lead the NATION in an act that DID NOT condone this violence but rather strove for a change in procedure.

In a lot of places officers use MACE to handle animals they fear may be aggressive, and it is more than effective. While it is painful, it is way better than deadly force and results in a subdued animal that can be safely captured or restrained to seek treatment. What happened to Lexie was unacceptable and it is not something that will just go away. People are angry, scared, and hurt and now worried for their own pets and will respond as such until something changes.

So please St, Clair Shores- be an instrument of change in the Nation, I propose that the City of St. Clair Shores start implementing the policy for their officers to use MACE when they feel threatened by an animal, I think that it will have a much better response in the community as well. Lead by example.

Sincerely
Jaci Wells
