Obituary: Developer Ted Gatzaros Dies at 68

Grosse Pointe Park resident Ted Gatzaros, a founder of Greektown Casino who also owns the Shore Club Apartments in St. Clair Shores, died Thursday.

Ted Gatzaros, a Grosse Pointe Park resident who developed and owned businesses in Detroit and St. Clair Shores, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013.

Gatzaros, 68, a Greek immigrant, brought casinos to Detroit and helped restore historic buildings which brought new businesses to the city and region.

Gatzaros and his wife, Maria, renovated and developed many properties in Detroit, including Trappers Alley and Pegasus Taverna in Greektown, the original Fishbone's Rhythm Kitchen Cafe, along with the Atheneum Suites Hotel, according to his company's website, 400 Monroe Associates.

In the 1980's, the company purchased and developed the Shore Club Apartments in St. Clair Shores and later built the Fishbone's in St. Clair Shores.

Earlier this year, Gatzaros and his son Nico opened the refurbished London Chop House.

"His success as an entrepreneur and civic leader is only exceeded by his devotion to his friends and exceptional family. He will be deeply missed by all," his family wrote in an email.

In addition to his business ventures, Gatzaros held seats on the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, the Detroit Medical Center, and the Central Business District Association and its Foundation.

Gatzaros, and his wife Maria, were awarded the Honorary Doctor of Laws Degrees from Northwood University this year.

Survivors include wife, Maria, children Nico and Ellena, and three grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held next week.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions be made to University Liggett School in honor of Ted Gatzaros Memorial Fund. Donations may be sent to University Liggett School, 1045 Cook Road, Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan 48236.
