Local Tennis Pro Selected to Lead Midwest Community Tennis Committee

Local tennis pro Chip Fazio has been appointed to run the Community Tennis Association Subcommittee for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Midwest Section. Chip’s extensive experience running programs for parks and recreation departments and community education organizations as well as his experience as president of the Grosse Pointe Community Tennis Association (GPTCA) make him a good fit for the position.

A community tennis association is any geographically defined, not-for-profit, volunteer-based tennis organization that supports or provides programs that promote and develop the growth of tennis. The GPTCA ran a successful USTA Midwest Youth Team Tennis League last summer at the Elworthy Field tennis courts in Grosse Pointe City.

Fazio’s company First Serve, runs tennis programs in seven different Eastside suburbs including Warren. Fazio said, “I love teaching in Roseville! The parents are great; the kids are great! It’s a really supportive community and parks department. Next summer we intend to start up a youth tennis league similar to the ones we have in Grosse Pointe and Warren” By using the USTA’s “red ball” and “orange ball” formats, First Serve runs a tennis program all fall and winter at the Roseville community center.

Fazio said that he is looking forward to working with the USTA Midwest Section to further promote the growth of tennis. “I want to get more kids and adults on the courts playing their hearts out and loving the sport, more ‘feet on concrete’ I like to say,” he said.

The USTA is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the U.S. and the leader in promoting and developing the growth of tennis at every level -- from local communities to the highest level of the professional game. It owns and operates the US Open, the highest attended annual sporting event in the world, and launched the US Open Series linking 10 summer tournaments to the US Open. In addition, it owns the 94 Pro Circuit events throughout the U.S., and selects the teams for the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, Olympic and Paralympic Games. A not-for-profit organization with 700,000 members, it invests 100 percent of its proceeds in growing the game.

The Midwest Section of the USTA covers, 5 Midwestern states, including Michigan.
