Join Transition Saint Clair Shores for In Transition 1.0, a short film that describes just what the Transition movement is all about. First of all, The Transition movement was founded by Rob Hopkins when he was teaching a permaculture course in Kinsale, Ireland. Rob had been a teacher of permaculture for a while and paid a visit to Colin Campbell, a peak oil researcher that lived down the road. After speaking with Colin, Rob had an epiphany! Why not use the ethics and principles of permaculture, a holistic framework used for evolving nature inspired solutions to modern human challenges, to the problem of fossil fuel depletion. The design of systems in permaculture focuses upon the concept of resilience. Resilience in a system means how stable it can remain in the face of disruption. A resilient society and a resilient culture would be better able to weather the challenges of financial crises, climate disruption and fossil fuel depletion than the society most of us find ourselves in today.

In 2006, Rob challenged his permaculture students to make an Energy Descent Action plan for the town of Kinsale, Ireland. The project was so successful that the town council adopted the plan as an official vision for what they would like to see the town become. Rob then went to his home town of Totnes, U.K. and helped organize his community to do the same thing. Rob then published the Transition Handbook to inspire other communities around the world to give this model for change a try.

Since its inception in Kinsale and Totnes, the Transition Movement has grown to include over 1000 communities throughout the world. As of June 2012, there were 421 official registered Transition Initiatives and 566 unofficial Transition groups.  So the Transition Movement has continued to grow and is now truly a global movement

The transition movement seeks to strengthen community, re-localize our economic activity and lead a lifestyle that is sustainable long into the future.
