Update from State Sen. Steve Bieda

Sen. Bieda shares his thoughts from and updates from Lansing.

This update from Lansing comes to Patch from state Sen. Steven Bieda:

I have received many requests from constituents regarding Michigan’s budget and how its funds are distributed. Below are two pie charts from the non-partisan Senate Fiscal Agency that detail where the state’s revenue comes from and where it is spent. I hope you find this information helpful.

Please feel free to distribute this information to others and contact my office with ideas about what we can do to better serve you. Communication with you is extremely important to me as I consider issues before the Michigan Senate.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you in the Michigan Senate. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

The “Local and Private” portion is made up of funds the state receives from foundations and nonprofit organizations as well as some services that local governments pay the state to provide.

The vast majority of Federal funds received by the state are restricted to be spent on specific programs, giving the state very little flexibility in their appropriation.

The “State Restricted” funds come from sources dedicated by the state constitution and other laws. For example a portion of the sales tax must be spent on School Aid and the gas tax must be used to fund transportation projects.
