Snowstorm Shifts, but it's Not Over Yet

You may have been disappointed this morning when you looked out the window expecting 6 inches of snow – or delighted that your morning plans won't be disrupted too much by the couple of inches we got overnight. But there's more on its way.

Snow is expected to move back into the area around 8 a.m. and it will periodically be heavy, according to the National Weather Service, with total accumulations from Thursday night through today up to 5 inches.

"With temperatures in the lower 30s, treated roads will be in fairly good shape through much of the morning rush. Secondary roads are likely slippier and will worsen during the course of the morning," it says in a special weather statement.

Officials in St. Clair Shores were ready for whatever Mother Nature offered up.

The Department of Public Works spent Thursday anti-icing the roads with a brine solution prior to the snow to help to minimize the bonding of the snow to the pavement. The DPW also mounted the plows to the trucks and filling them with salt.

But why did we get less snow than some had hoped for (or dreaded)? The storm system shifted slightly farther to the north than forecast, so the Saginaw Valley and the Thumb are bearing the brunt of the storm.

Warmer air surging up into lower Michigan could mean snow changes to a rain and sleet to mix here during the late morning and afternoon. Northerly winds are expected increase late this afternoon with gusts to 35 mph possible.
