Kiluk Wants to Raise Green Awareness in St. Clair Shores

This St. Clair Shores resident is a founder of Transition St. Clair Shores and a member of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee.

Name: Stephen Kiluk, founder of and a member of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee.

Green Dream: “I think raising people’s awareness is probably the most important thing you can do right now,” Kiluk said. “And I really would like to see that awareness turn into some real change in the city in terms of people thinking about how they can live more locally, and how we can actually redevelop our local economy and lead better lives and have more free time and be healthier as a result of living more locally.

“I think if people can get in the mindset that living locally and staying around where you are from can actually be fun and help build stronger connections between people,” he said. “It can actually be better than the life we have where everyone is always driving around and going different places. That’s kind of like my dream.”

Why Go Green? “I was always interested in it from my childhood,” Kiluk said. “I was in Cub Scouts, and I got some exposure to it at that time. But things really started to come together for me when I took AP geography with Mr. Bonne at Lakeview High School. That opened my eyes to all the different global issues that we are facing in terms of exponential population growth in our population, the way we grow food with the green revolution and industrialized farming, some of the huge impacts of our globalized economy.

“That really got me interested in what was going on in the world and inspired me to do a lot more research,” Kiluk said. “And then a lot of the research that I did and the people that I ended up meeting kind of led me on the way to starting Transition St. Clair Shores."
