Happening This Weekend: Music, Magic and More

Fairy tales, Christmas in July and all kinds of summer magic await you as you plan your weekend in and around St. Clair Shores.

Here's the lowdown on some cool events happening in and around St. Clair Shores.

Why Go: Enjoy a free independent movie at the library. This month's pick is Illegal, a Belgian film about a Russian woman living illegally with her son in Belgium. See a movie you won't be seeing at the multiplex while beating the heat indoors.

CONCERTS, AL FRESCO

Where/When: Downtown Mount Clemens, 7:30-11 p.m. July 22.

Why Go: Enjoy two free concerts in downtown Mount Clemens this evening. The kicks off at 7:30 p.m. along the Riverfront, at Northbound Gratiot and Crocker, and concertgoers will enjoy "The Legends of Doo Wop" The Marcels & Shades of Blue. Then, meander over to the at Macomb Place and Pine, for a show of rock jams by Smokin' Ash.

Where/When: , 9:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. July 22-23.

Why Go: The Back Door Blues rock the Blue Goose this weekend.

Pricing: No cover.

Where/When: , 9 p.m.-12:30 a.m. July 22-23.

Why Go: Hear Nouveauté perform at Rojo's on several dates in July, bringing their mix of jazz, big band, Motown, oldies, disco, funk, top forty and hip-hop to the crowds.

Pricing: No cover.

Where/When: , 9 p.m.-midnight July 23.

Why Go: Coyote Station is holding its annual Christmas in July party, with a visit from "Santa's Little Helpers." Drink specials and more are planned.

Where/When: ; 3-6 p.m. July 24.

Why Go: Enjoy a live show at Pat O'Brien's as 3 Sheets brings its soul-flavored rock to the tavern.

Pricing: No cover.

Where/When: Metro Beach Metropark, 31300 Metropolitan Parkway, Harrison Township, 6:30-10 p.m. July 24.

Why Go: Take part in a free concert and dancing at Metro Beach's Thomas S. Welsh Activity Center. Tonight's act is Mike Wolverton  playing big band and ballroom tunes.

Pricing: "Free" except for park pass, which is $5 for a daily vehicle admission or $25 for an annual pass, good for any Metropark, or $15 for senior citizens (62 or older).

Where/When: Wahby Park, 24800 Jefferson, 7-8 p.m. July 25.

Why Go: Enjoy a free chamber music concert at Wahby Park, brought to you by area businesses. Tonight's act is Duo d' Lonnacs String Quartet.

Pricing: Free.

Where/When: Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum, by the , 7 p.m. July 26.

Why Go: The Mountain Dulcimer Club, aka the "Sweet Mountain Strings," will be performing outdoors every Tuesday this summer. The public is invited to their informal concerts. Bring your own lawn chairs and hear folk music, gospel songs and mountain music.

Pricing: Free.

Where/When: , 7:30-9 p.m. July 27.

Why Go: Enjoy free summer concerts presented by Michelob Ultra. Every Wednesday enjoy a live show at Veterans Memorial Park. Tonight's act is Air Margaritaville, performing Jimmy Buffett tunes.

Or, there are plenty of other amusements:

Where/When: Corner of Bedford and Kercheval, Grosse Pointe Park, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 23 (rain date is July 24).

Why Go: What started out as one kid's idea for a dog wash has grown into a community event benefiting the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society. Stop in and get your pooch groomed and help a great cause. Your nose and your conscience will thank you.

Pricing: $10 per dog.

And maybe once Fido is all fresh and groomed, you may want to take him over to enjoy this:

Where/When: 49 Macomb Place, Mount Clemens, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Why Go: Downtown Mount Clemens is going to the dogs (and cats and other critters) with the Dog Days of Summer's pet-centric fun, including pet parade, pet rescue and adoption, ID services, groomers, pet massages, obedience demos and more. Plus kids will be amused with the Scooby Mystery to solve. Just be sure, with the temperatures sure to soar, that you don't leave your animals in a parked car for any length of time (even a few moments is too much) and get them plenty of cool, fresh water.

And then, there's enchantment afoot:

Where/When: , 11 a.m.-4 p.m. July 23

Why Go: This event is perfect for kids and kids at heart, as Ford House holds its inaugural Fairy Tale Festival. Meet characters in costume, buy a refreshment from the Mad Hatter's concession stand, act as a pawn on a giant chessboard, play croquet with the Queen of Hearts, enjoy stories, music, puppetry and more in this fun afternoon.
