Happening This Week: One Last Peach, Pooch Prance, and 9/11 Remembrances

Looking for family fun for the week? From festivals, a mix of history and theater, to a 9/11 family day and remembrance at Metro Beach, there's plenty to do.

Perhaps you're reading this Monday morning, enjoying your Labor Day holiday and are thinking, "What can I do that's fun for the whole family?"

If that's the case, today's the final day of the . Head to downtown Romeo for some sweet fun.
There are arts and crafts shows. There are plenty of goodies to enjoy, including a bake sale, chicken and rib dinners, deep fried peach desserts, peach pies and more. There are three parades: The Children's Parade at 10 a.m., the 1 p.m. VFW Post 2052 Peach Festival Parade, and the 1:30 p.m. 2011 Peach Festival Floral Parade. And of course, there's the carnival. Where there's a Tilt-A-Whirl and a Ferris Wheel, there are happy children.


Where/When: St. Paul's Ceremony, Moross Road and Country Club Lane, Grosse Pointe; 8 p.m. Sept. 8-11.
Why Go: Get ready for a beautiful pairing of theater and history, as the Grosse Pointe Theatre its annual Talking Headstones event. This year's take is a new version, where you'll see a vivid historical reenactment featuring people and events from Grosse Pointe's past. Pricing: $15.

Where/When: Macomb Place and North Walnut, downtown Mount Clemens; 11 a.m. Sept. 10.
Why Go: It's the final day of the Summer Fun Saturdays season. Head to the Fountain Stage on Macomb Place and enjoy live entertainment. Today, Rosco the Clown will amuse kids with magic and balloon animals.
Pricing: Free.

Where/When: Metro Beach Metropark; 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 10.
Why Go: The park's Nature Center will hold a presentation on hummingbirds and monarch butterflies, which will be starting their falll migration south soon. Learn about these remarkable and delicate creatures, do a craft project and more.

Where/When: , 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 11.
Why Go: Enjoy a day at Ford House, get a little fresh air and exercise, and help a great cause. It's the Pooch Prance, a six-mile walk (or less if that's too much) on the grounds of the estate, which benefits the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society. Refreshments will be available, plus there will be raffle drawings and prizes.

Where/When: Metro Beach Metropark; 5-9:30 p.m. Sept. 11.
Why Go: The Huron-Clinton Metroparks are holding special 9/11 tributes at it parks, including Metro Beach. Family fun starts at 5 p.m., with face painting, bounce houses, music and more. At 8:15 an official recognition and thank-you ceremony will begin, concluding with the lighting of floating lanterns at 9:11 p.m., which will be released over the lake. Guests can purchase sky lanterns on site that evening for $5, money which will benefit the Salvation Army.
Pricing: Free admission for veterans, active military, police, and firefighters starting at 5 p.m. Otherwise, a vehicle entry permit is required to enter any Huron-Clinton Metropark. Cost is $5 for the day.
